Project supported by a philanthropic donation from mackenzie scott; participants will be trained in coding for the pilot
MIAMI, August 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — United Way Miamiin partnership with Social financea national nonprofit impact fundraising and advisory organization, today announced the launch of the United Way Miami Workforce Projectan initiative aimed at increasing the skills Miami residents and empower them to secure in-demand jobs that lead to economic mobility. This program is the direct result of a multi-million dollar donation made to United Way Miami in 2020 by philanthropist and novelist, mackenzie scott.
“We conducted an extensive study that included focus groups with multiple stakeholder groups and careful analysis of what contributes to financial instability in our community. We came to the conclusion that a community development program workforce with student-friendly funding is the best solution to help our residents develop valuable skills and earn higher-paying jobs,” said Mary DonworthProgram Director at United Way Miami. “We are extremely grateful to Ms. Scott for her incredibly generous donation and we look forward to using it to further the career advancement of Miami Dade County residents. Social Finance runs the United Way Miami Workforce Project, which was launched as a pilot program with a training partner 4Geeks Academy train Miami residents for careers in coding and programming technologies. Participants have the option to register with 4Geeks Full Stack Developer 9-week full-time program or 16-week part-time program with no upfront cost. Over 82% of 4Geeks students get a job in the field within a year of completing the course. Interested participants can apply at miamiworkforce.org.
The United Way Miami Workforce Project was structured as a Pay It Forward Funds create a sustainable cycle of professional training – the first of its kind in the state. Participants who find jobs earning more than a certain amount will repay the cost of their tuition through monthly payments, contributing to a common fund to support future learners. They may also be eligible to receive essential support services such as career advice, living allowances and emergency relief funds to help them graduate and succeed. The pilot project will serve a total of 100 students. United Way and Social Finance expect the project to expand to training providers in other industries in the coming months, such as transportation and healthcare.

This initiative comes at a critical time, as Miamians continue to grapple with the social and economic upheaval unleashed by the pandemic. More than half of households in Miami Dade County struggling to make ends meet or living in poverty. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average weekly wage in Miami Dade County are below the national average of $1,173, despite the fact that the cost of living exceeds the national average. Research shows that the pandemic has exacerbated the already precarious financial situations of the ALICE population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).
