The spread of COVID-19 has exacerbated a pre-existing global housing crisis, which was already affecting millions of people. As COVID-19 spread around the world, billions of people were told to stay home. However, this simple preventive public health measure was and is impossible for people who are homeless or living in unsafe or overcrowded housing. Lack of basic services, stress and unhealthy living conditions also contribute to poor health. Housing is a fundamental human right and has played a central role in the fight against COVID-19. The special session will discuss the challenges posed by the inability of the market to provide adequate, safe and affordable housing to low-income and vulnerable populations in Europe and Africa.
