Miguel Zenón’s vision of the history of the American continents

Miguel Zenón – Music of the Americas (Miel Music, 2022)

“Música de Las Américas” (Music of the Americas), the latest album by acclaimed Puerto Rican saxophonist, composer and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón, focuses on the history of North and South America.

Zenón skillfully uses contemporary saxophone-fueled jazz and the captivating rhythms of traditional music from Puerto Rico, Haiti and other regions to illustrate the history of the peoples who inhabited the Caribbean, the great empires of the Americas, the revolutions of past centuries and other aspects.

This music is inspired by the history of the American continent: not only before European colonization, but also by what has happened since: cause and effect.“, explains Miguel Zenon.

The album features Zenón’s longtime working quartet with Luis Perdomo on piano, Hans Glawischnig on bass and drummer Henry Cole as well as outstanding Puerto Rican percussionists such as Los Pleneros de La Cresta, Paoli Mejías, Daniel Díaz and Victor Emmanuelli.
