Part-time living abroad is becoming increasingly popular, especially for those who wish to try a ‘traveling retirement’ lifestyle in Europe for the size. A new report from the editors of International Living details the pros and cons of a traveling retreat and offers tips on how to enjoy an extended stay in Europe while playing by the rules.

BALTIMORE (PRWEB) August 31, 2021

A “traveling retreat” lifestyle is a great way to explore the planet.

Nowadays, a fulfilling part-time life abroad is quite achievable with attractive global visa and residency options. Plus, there are tons of safe, affordable, and ultra-livable countries to choose from.

“For employees who have the ability to log in to work from anywhere and for retirees who are not yet ready to commit to one location overseas, a flexible overseas solution and at shorter term may be wise – and in Europe you have some great options, ”says Jennifer Stevens, editor, InternationalLiving.com.

“This roaming solution allows you to thoroughly test many locations. You don’t spend a week, you spend two or three months, and that can give you a really good idea if you’ve landed somewhere you might want to come back to someday. ”

A traveling retreat is more than just an extended vacation. For many it is a way of life. Expats who experience it say it stems from a desire to replace the tourist’s mindset with an approach to life like a local, looking at a country’s culture from the inside rather than from the outside.

Retirees, pre-retirees, online entrepreneurs (of all ages) and nomad adventurers continue to experience the joys of a low-key expat lifestyle tailored to their personal circumstances. Many report that they are ultimately on the hunt for a place to settle down, but like to try out various places for size, a few months at a time.

For many Americans and Canadians, Europe is firmly at the top of the list when it comes to the enchanting possibilities of part-time living. With gorgeous beaches and breathtaking forests, there is more than enough variety in culture, geography and weather to suit any taste. Delicious food, a fascinating history, and vibrant social interactions are guaranteed in every corner of Europe, so the toughest decision may be where to start exploring.

European travel rules can change quickly, so always get the most up-to-date visa information before you travel.

The new report examines some of the pros and cons of moving part-time to Europe …

Advantages

Lower cost of living

Despite preconceptions, expats find that many of Europe’s most livable countries are more economical than living in North America. Portugal, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic are just a few examples of countries where the dollar goes much further.

A more organic approach to living abroad

The more people in European countries try for a few months, the more confidence they gain and the easier it is. Travel is adaptable and low-stress – it’s about seeing where the journey takes you, rather than committing to one foreign place.

World-class healthcare

Medical services in most European countries are top notch and are generally more affordable than in the United States.

Exit strategy

Taking advantage of a traveling European retreat is a minimum commitment. If people ultimately decide that it is not for them or that they are homesick, they can return to North America more easily than if they are tied to a more permanent situation which includes having a home. home abroad.

The spice of life

Europe has it all: unique wildlife, sunny beaches, lush mountain villages and welcoming towns with towering castles, cultural wonders and welcoming cafes stuck in narrow, cobbled lanes. When expat life is about staying in one place for months at a time, people get the best of both worlds: the chance to be part of a local community for a while and the constant anticipation of future trips. .

The inconvenients

Missing friends and family

Even if people choose to spend half the year in Europe and the rest in North America, they will still face some physical separation from their loved ones. But Skype and FaceTime can help.

Less time to learn how each country works

The more people move, the less time is left to assimilate all the little tricks and nuances that make life in a new country easier: how to get around, where locals find free entertainment, which grocery stores stock their favorite foods, and more. the language, making new lifelong friends and learning to navigate a country’s bureaucracy, traditions and way of life take more than a month or two.

Less stability

The very thing that makes a traveling retreat so fun (more traveling), can take its toll over time. The increased culture shock associated with living in different countries for a year is very real. The shorter the stay, the more difficult it is to establish comfortable routines.

How does the Schengen area work?

In Europe, 26 countries currently fall under the Schengen visa regime. Currently, US and Canadian passport holders are allowed to stay in Schengen countries without a visa for a total of 90 days out of 180 days. For border control purposes, the Schengen area acts a bit like a single country, with easier freedom of movement between each country within the area.

Once people have taken advantage of 90 days in Schengen, they must then spend 90 days outside the area before re-entering. And beware: staying too long in Schengen can result in a hefty fine and / or deportation, so don’t leave the exit at the last minute. These 90 days in Schengen include the days of arrival and departure. The days do not need to be consecutive, but they are treated as cumulative.

“This system is going to change quite a bit soon, with an additional requirement that is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2022,” said Kevin Casey, IL contributor. “The ETIAS prerequisite will apply to Canadian and US citizens traveling to the Schengen area. ETIAS is a visa waiver introduced to pre-screen visa-exempt travelers in Schengen countries. It aims to ensure the safety of all travelers by reducing illegal immigration and managing potential security threats within Schengen countries, including terrorism.

“Obtaining the new ETIAS authorization is fairly straightforward: you apply online from the US or Canada (which takes around 20 minutes) and if all goes well you will then receive an electronic travel authorization at Multiple entries valid for three years.

For more information on ETIAS for US and Canadian travelers, go here: How does the Schengen zone work?

“This visa exemption does not allow free travel throughout Europe, it is only for Schengen countries,” notes Casey.

“Fortunately, there are a number of European countries that are not part of the Schengen area, so if you plan to walk around Europe indefinitely, that’s not a problem at all. When it’s time to leave Schengen, just jump at least for 90 days in one or more non-Schengen countries such as Albania, Croatia, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, UK, Romania, Monaco, Turkey etc. D ‘other possibilities include crossing the Mediterranean to North Africa (Morocco is popular) or spending time in one or more of the non-Schengen ex-Soviet states such as Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, etc. .

The Costa Daurada is much more than excitement PortAventura World https://tyntescastle.com/the-costa-daurada-is-much-more-than-excitement-portaventura-world/ https://tyntescastle.com/the-costa-daurada-is-much-more-than-excitement-portaventura-world/#respond Fri, 27 Aug 2021 21:00:00 +0000 https://tyntescastle.com/the-costa-daurada-is-much-more-than-excitement-portaventura-world/

Suspended 367 feet above the ground at the end of the roller coaster’s top, I held my breath as the car rolled over the edge.

With the Spanish sun blazing as I looked down, the thrill seekers below now as tiny as ants, I swallowed.

4

Jetskiing around popular Salou beach on the Costa Daurada

Suddenly we drop to 112 mph, returning to the mouth of the tunnel that originally spat at us – the sound of a Ferrari engine roaring in the background.

I was at PortAventura World on the Costa Daurada, and aboard the Ferrari-themed Red Force roller coaster, the fastest of its kind in Europe.

Just an hour’s drive from Barcelona Airport, this huge theme park attracts hundreds of British families to the famous seaside resort of Salou every year.

It’s easy to spend weeks here, with its themed lands filled with enough adrenaline-charged attractions to give Walt Disney a run for its money, as well as restaurants, shows, and parades.

Boarding a taxi we head south to the port of Ametlla de Mar. From there you can take a catamaran to the Balfego bluefin tuna ponds, home to hundreds of brilliant fish.

A guided tour allows visitors to swim with them and taste tuna in its most natural form, the shashimi style.

Equipped with snorkels, we got into the water.

Some fish here weigh 600kg, our guide told us. Plunging our heads into the sea, we watched in wonder schools of huge tuna, over two meters long, swimming beneath us, their scaly flesh catching the light.

But it’s not just tuna that is raised here. Just down the road is the Ebro Delta region, famous for its fatty mussels and oysters.

Located in the natural park and surrounded by salt marshes, coastal lagoons and seabirds, there is a mussel farm that tourists visit by boat.

Further inland and not far from the Costa Daurada are a series of vineyards belonging to the Carretera del Vi – a Mediterranean wine route that begins in Sitges and winds for 33 km to Sant Marti Sarroca.

Visit of the vineyard

The Esportec travel agency offers an unusual way to enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard, for € 75 pp. Hopping aboard your own Segway, you’ll pass rows of plump grapes and grassy landscapes, stopping at grand chateaux along the way, and ending the day with wine tasting in the cellars.

If you really love wine, it’s worth venturing into the Acustic Celler in the historic town of Marca, sheltered from civilization on a lush hillside.

The 42 acres of sun-drenched vineyards and centuries-old olive trees are nothing short of extraordinary – their rich reds, pungent whites, and punchy pinks are also top notch.

Back on the Salou seafront, I saw in the distance a few paragliders and a group of children hovering in the air on flyboards, jets of water flowing under them as they flickered.

It’s a bit of a party spot here, although the place still feels family-friendly. Rows of lively bars, ice cream parlors, and seafood restaurants line a bustling promenade leading to a huge fountain.

The beachfront Arena restaurant serves tapas, including Andalusian-style calamari, duck cannelloni with truffles and cold cuts, all washed down with a superb local rioja.

We had settled in the Ohtels Villa Romana on the outskirts of town. This is a traditional Costa hotel, with palm-fringed gardens that contain the ruins of a Roman villa, as well as swimming pools and sun terraces.

After a day exploring the city, we returned to find a live band paying homage to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Hands clapped and bodies swayed to the beat of the music as waiters served pitchers of sangria.

The Costa Daurada offers all the delicacies you would expect from a Spanish Costa, but go a few miles further and you will discover authentic local delicacies.

The Aegadian Islands are an archipelago located off the western coast of Sicily. These islands have a different slice of Italian life, where the locals live a relaxed bohemian-style lifestyle. This archipelago has all the excitement and culture of the continent. If you are looking for a new destination for your next vacation in Italy, you are ready to go. Read on to learn more about the Aegadian Islands, Italy’s best-kept secret.

Marettimo

Everything about the Aegadian Islands

The archipelago of the Egadi Islands is the largest marine protected area in Europe. The islands have an abundance of natural resources and wildlife. The great Poseidon meadows are a wonderful habitat that promotes the reproduction of many species including shells, migratory birds, Caretta Caretta sea turtles and even monk seals.

The three islands also still have the feel of the real Italy – where some people still live as they have for hundreds of years, seemingly untouched by modern life. Here you will see donkeys and dogs roaming free as the locals go about their daily business in the village. Most likely than not, you can spot some pleasant looking elderly women crocheting something for a loved one while they watch over the village. If you want to experience Italy the local way, take a trip to these beautiful islands.

Explore the sea caves of Favginana

Favginana is the largest island in the archipelago. It is only half an hour by hydrofoil from Trapani in Sicily. Santa Caterina and San Giacomo are charming towns with Gothic churches and spectacular Norman castles. For recreation, the island has many options, including great snorkeling spots such as the rocky coast of Scalo Cavallo and the astonishing Cala Azzurra.

Tuna fishing is an institution here thanks to the Florio family. Make sure to visit Stabilimento Florio, where you can see artefacts like amphorae from various historical periods. Museum guides will teach you about the island’s fascinating fishing history.

Live a spectacular diving experience in Levanzo

Levanzo is the smallest island of the group. A named restaurant Arcobaleno is the main gathering place for the 200 inhabitants of the island. For a special experience, visit Grotta del Genovese and see the work of the Neolithic people sketched on the walls dating back 12,000 years.

This small, peaceful and exquisite island has a lot to offer diving enthusiasts. Levanzo has a fascinating underwater archaeological route between Cala minnola and Altarella headland where the remains of a Roman wreck are found. Other notable places on the island include the smooth pebble beach of Cala fredda, and the prehistoric caves of Grotta del Genovese.

Visit Mystique Marettimo

Marettimo is the rockiest and island of the archipelago. The beautiful Tramontane Cafe greets visitors to the port with a lobster trap suspended from the ceiling. The 300 inhabitants of the island are divided between sea and mountains. The unique fishing village here is a highlight of the island, with its cluster of tiny houses. Daily life here revolves around the catch of the day.

Adventurers will have fun on Marettimo. The island has many scenic hiking trails that twist and turn in and out of the village and the hills. Novelist Samuel Butler claimed that the island of Marettimo was what inspired Ithaca in Homer Odyssey. When you see the beautiful rugged landscape of this island with hundreds of sea caves surrounded by crystal clear sea, you will be inclined to agree with it.

How to get to the Aegadian Islands

You can get to the Aegadian Islands by ferry or seaplane from various points in Sicily. Visitors depart by hydrofoil from Trapani to reach the shores of Favignana. The other minor islands are accessible by ferries with the option of carrying your vehicle on board. You can also rent a boat from the locals and navigate between the islands.

Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, located in the North Atlantic. Politically, the island is divided between the Republic of Ireland to the south – which covers over 80% of the island – and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. The euro is used in the Republic of Ireland, while the pound sterling is the currency of the North.

Ireland may not be a very big island, but it has a great variety of landscapes, not to mention historic sites, some of which are best accessible by car. Therefore, a road trip is the best way to make the most of your trip to the Emerald Isle. We’ll show you the best, some longer than others, but all spectacular. Remember to drive on the left!

Road trips will take you from one part of Ireland to another. Before starting your trip, make sure you are aware of the restrictions and requirements related to Covid-19.

Please note that the routes on this map can be taken in any specific variant.

1. The Ring of Kerry

For this 111 mile road trip around the Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Ireland with spectacular views, plan two to three days here. The round trip begins and ends in Killarney, allowing you to stop at Moll’s Gap for a view and tour of Killarney National Park and the sparkling lakes below. The park is known for its many lakes, native oak and yew forests, as well as Muckross House and Gardens, a late 19th century mansion where you can see a bedroom Queen Victoria stayed in. during his famous trip to Ireland.

Along the way there are other highlights, like the white sand beaches framed by the sheer cliffs of Derrynana and Rossbeigh. Exit the main road and watch a film location featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Skellig Ring, just off Cahersiveen. If the lakes aren’t enough, there’s also the Torc Waterfall, which is at its best after heavy rains.

You can interrupt your road trip at any time to visit some of the pretty villages along the way, like Kenmare, known for its art galleries and old world pubs – for snacks and drinks. It’s not just Star Wars that you can find out. There is true stargazing at night in one of only three International Gold Level Dark Sky Reserves on the planet. Due to COVID-19, however, and since a safe distance is not possible in the dark, stargazing is currently done via a zoom meeting. Here’s how to see it.

A great place to spend the night is the Moorings in Portmagee. The idyllic seaside village is home to this cozy guest house and a superb seafood restaurant where you will experience the best of Irish hospitality.

2. Wild Atlantic Way

Who could resist a road trip with a name like that, practically shouting “adventure” at every turn? It’s also a gigantic journey along the west coast of Ireland from the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal to the seaside town of Kinsale in County Cork. The trip includes a total of 1,553 miles of uninterrupted road, 15 landmark signs and countless numbers of famous zigzag road signs. If you plan to make the entire trip, you will need two to three weeks. Always planning for stops along the way to take in the many attractions, this trip can easily be broken down into smaller sections, either north or south.

Some must-see landmarks along the Wild Atlantic Way are County Malin Head Donegal. It is the most northerly point in Ireland with beautiful beaches and some of the largest sand dunes in Europe. From north to south there is Fanad Head, with its lighthouse, the Slieve League Cliffs and, of course, the impressive Basalt Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most famous tourist attractions. Why not take a detour to Achill Island with its bog and small beaches, as well as another spectacular cliff peninsula, Mizen Head, very close to Ireland’s most southerly point, and often the first or last spectacle to be seen by sailors crossing the Atlantic.

3. Galway to Westport

This is another two to three day road trip that will take you to the heart of the West of Ireland i.e. Connemara and County Mayo. Take the N59 leaving Galway behind and explore the bog landscape with views of the Maumturk Mountains. Continue towards Clifden and take time for the 10 mile Sky Road, hairpin turn after hairpin turn, looking out over Inishturk and Turbot Islands, before reaching Westport with a beautiful Georgian town center and stone bridges.

Since you will need to spend an overnight stay, Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara is a great choice.

4. The Braveheart reader

This 80 km road trip is intended for movie buffs. As the name suggests, it leads along places where many of the film’s battle scenes Brave Heart were shot. The western part of the Wicklow Mountains lends itself to filming just as it now lends itself to a quite scenic road trip. Believe it or not, it starts in a little village called Hollywood! It continues towards Wicklow Gap, a stretch that cuts through the typical Wicklow peat landscape and through the mountains. Further on you reach the village of Laragh after passing the spectacular Sally Gap. Next is Glendalough, home to a 5th-century abbey with the tallest and best-preserved round tower in Europe. Then return to Hollywood, a very pleasant village with an interesting church and, more importantly, enough pubs to have a drink and a meal after your ride.

5. The coastal causeway route

This road trip takes you to Northern Ireland. It starts in Belfast City and ends in Derry, with plenty of highlights along the way. The total length is 195 miles and it depends entirely on your time and how many days you can spend on this trip. Expect rugged scenery along the nine valleys of the Antrim Coast, castles, cliffs, pretty little towns and, of course, the Giant’s Causeway – a must-see landmark. If you can, also plan a trip to Belfast and / or Derry, two interesting places to explore.

Whichever way you divide your trip, or do it all in one go, here are some highlights you shouldn’t miss. Carrickfergus Castle is a massive 12th-century castle located on the shores of Belfast Lough. Gobbins Cliff Path and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge are two stops for thrill seekers and adventure seekers. The Gobbin Trail winds around the cliffs of the Antrim Coast and the Rope Bridge, built by salmon fishermen in 1755, and oscillating 100 feet above the North Atlantic. It is well maintained and safe to walk through, but if you are dizzy it might not be for you.

The port of Ballintoy is just another Game Of Thrones place that will finally lead you to the Giant’s Causeway. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, some 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, created by a volcanic eruption from a unique “sculpture” created by Mother Nature. According to legend, they served as a springboard for an Irish giant named Fionn MacCumhaill in his quest to defeat another giant.

After all the excitement of monkey bridges and cliff trails, you might want a soothing glass of whiskey, and there’s no better place than Ireland’s oldest distillery, Bushmills, which is located also along the road.

6. The V: Waterford and Tipperary

Back in the South, it’s a short and pleasant road trip. Maybe two to three hours, this takes you from Lismore, with its castle along a winding road, into the Knockmealdown Mountains, and to the V Gap, which gives this trip its name. This is where you can admire the verdant scenery of County Tipperary. Continue through Clogheen and past the romantic Swiss Cottage to Cahir, home to one of the largest and best-preserved castles in the country. Cahir Castle stands on a rocky island on the banks of the River Suir and dates back to 13e century. It was once considered impregnable but was finally conquered in 1599. Take the time to visit the courtyards and enjoy another filming location in Ireland: the castle featured in the productions of Excalibur and The Tudors.

7. Following the Poet William Butler Yeats: From Sligo to County Leitrim

The Irish are great storytellers and poets, and if you love literature, you’ll want to follow this full-day road trip that touches on important sites in the life and work of famous poet William Butler Yeats. He has had a longstanding affinity with Sligo, so start your journey at Lough Gill, where you can see a small island featured in one of his poems. Proceed to the town of Sligo, romantically located on the banks of the Garavogue River, where you can learn all about the poet’s life at the Yeats Building.

Continue to the breezy sandy beach at Rosses Point, where Yeats spent many childhood summers. Pass the stately home of Lissadell House and cross County Leitrim to see Glencar Waterfall – featured in his poem The stolen child. A fitting end to the journey in Yeats’ footsteps is a visit to his grave at Drumcliffe Cemetery.

Stay overnight or visit and dine in the historic Georgian estate of Coopershill.

Professional advice

Most of these road trips are only suitable if you are a confident, experienced driver who has no problem negotiating very tight turns, driving on what you think is on the wrong side of the road. For all the stops and detours along the way, bring good walking shoes as well as water and snacks, as not all provide refreshments.

On another note, the Irish are tea drinkers. They like their tea very strong and with a lot of milk or cream, which is first poured into the cup. This was originally done to prevent delicate porcelain cups from cracking.

12 things to know before your first trip to Transylvania https://tyntescastle.com/12-things-to-know-before-your-first-trip-to-transylvania/ https://tyntescastle.com/12-things-to-know-before-your-first-trip-to-transylvania/#respond Mon, 02 Aug 2021 22:19:33 +0000 https://tyntescastle.com/12-things-to-know-before-your-first-trip-to-transylvania/

Twenty years ago, when I told people that I grew up in Transylvania, inevitably my eyes were wide and incredulous, accompanied by the question, “Is this a real place?” Sometimes it was followed by “Have you ever met a vampire?”

A land once known in the United States only as a setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Transylvania is today a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. In fact, it’s one of National Geographic’s top 25 places to visit in 2021. And for good reason.

Cradled in the center of the magnificent, heavily wooded Carpathian mountain range, Transylvania is indeed a land of enchantment. Lazy hills and rivers, deep woods and tumultuous streams, pristine mountain lakes and wildflower meadows are just a few of the region’s natural wonders. The plethora of medieval castles, walled towns and quaint villages in Transylvania is why we sometimes call my homeland Tündérország – “Fairyland”.

However, Transylvania is a real place, with real people, although it has a pastoral feel of old Europe, where you will still see horse-drawn carts on the streets. And, it is open to visitors who seem to have discovered its beauty. Once behind the Iron Curtain – which is why people in the United States believed it was a fictional land – Transylvania welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Now, when I tell people “I grew up in Transylvania”, I encounter enthusiastic looks and specific questions about the land and its people, the places to go and the best ways to get there. To answer these questions, here are some things to know before your first visit to Transylvania.

1. You need a passport to travel to Transylvania, but you do not need a visa

Transylvania is part of Romania and you need a passport to enter the country. Check your dates to make sure your passport does not expire for at least three months after your date of departure for Romania. On top of that, you don’t need a visa to visit unless you plan to stay longer than 90 days.

2. You can fly to multiple cities to use as gateways to all of your destinations

Several cities in Transylvania have international airports that you can fly to. There’s no need to fly to Bucharest and worry about taking public transport or renting a car.

At that time, you can fly to Cluj or Sibiu, and soon to Brasov (the city’s international airport should be finished by December 2021). These three cities are perfect destinations on their own, but also gateways to other attractions in Transylvania.

3. For most of your transactions, you will use the lei (RON), the Romanian currency.

In Transylvania, you will use lei for your transactions, so it is useful to exchange some before you leave or when you arrive at the airport. But you don’t need it.

You’ll find plenty of ATMs everywhere, around street corners or at local banks, where you can use your debit card to withdraw local currency from your bank. The ATM will display the rate and any fees charged before your transaction, which you can complete in English. This is by far the easiest, and therefore my preferred choice of transactions. You always get the official transaction rate, and the fees are minimal and convenient.

You can also use your major credit cards in major cities and tourist destinations, but be sure to ask them if they take them before you sit down for dinner at a restaurant.

4. Tipping is customary and appreciated

As in the rest of Romania, tips are appreciated in Transylvania. The wages are low, so your tip is always useful.

As for the tip, there is no standard answer. Typically, locals tip around 10%, so this is a good rule of thumb to follow, even if it depends on your bill; the higher the bill, the lower the tip percentage.

5. To charge your electronic devices, you will need a converter

Romania uses 220V as opposed to the 110V used in the United States. So you will need a converter for all your electronic devices. Bring a few so you can plug in and charge your devices. But if you forget them, you can easily buy them at any electronics store in the country.

Laptops, tablets, Kindles, and similar devices all perform here as well as they do in the United States. Wi-Fi is available in major cities and in most places, except in some remote villages in the countryside.

6. Your cell phone works there – Just make sure you have service

Before you go, be sure to call your mobile operator and let them know that you are traveling to Romania. You will probably have the option of adding a temporary international service from your provider. With most plans, you can choose to upgrade it for a month or as long as you need.

You will have good mobile coverage in most parts of Transylvania, especially in cities.

7. You will hear some spoken languages, but you don’t need to understand them

Although part of Romania, Transylvania is home to several nationalities. Besides Romanian, a large majority speak Hungarian. Like many parts of Europe, the region has a colorful history, with often shifting borders that have resulted in this mix of people over the centuries.

Due to this mix of nationalities, the people of Transylvania are cosmopolitan and open-minded. Many are bilingual and speak fluent English, so you won’t have any problems communicating there. The younger generation are especially happy to practice their language skills with you.

It still helps to understand a few words of Romanian, as the public signs are in the official state language. And if you are visiting the Hungarian speaking regions, a few words in Hungarian will be appreciated.

8. You will probably make some friends during your stay

The people of Transylvania are friendly and known for their hospitality. Not only will they go out of their way to communicate with you in your language, but they’ll invite you to their home and won’t let you go without a meal – and a drink.

And if you ask about any of the places you want to visit in their vicinity, they will be happy to play the guide. They will tell you everything about where to find your destination and how to get there with personal stories, myths and legends about it. They may even offer to take you there themselves.

9. You will have the opportunity to explore medieval castles, fortresses and fortified churches

Transylvania is dotted with medieval castles, citadels, and fortresses, so you’ll find a few nearby no matter where you land. No wonder Bram Stoker chose this campaign for his fictional vampire story. Bran Castle, however, is far from the largest or most spectacular castle in Transylvania.

This honor goes to the Gothic-style fairytale castle Hunyadi in the east-central part of Transylvania, one of the largest and most spectacular castles in all of Europe. However, you will find a greater concentration of castles in southern Transylvania, built to protect the borders, with Bran Castle being one of them.

Also in southern Transylvania, you will find the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And everywhere you go you will see remains of small castles, citadels or medieval fortresses, in different stages of ruins.

In larger cities, like Cluj and Brasov, you will find parts of the old walls and bastions that once protected them. But none correspond to the center of Sighișoara, with its walls and buildings still intact. It is the only inhabited medieval fortress in south-eastern Europe, and therefore another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

10. You will find many forests in Transylvania

Transylvania is also home to some of the oldest and densest forests in Europe. Even the name reflects it, because Transylvania means “above the woods” in Latin: trans = finished, silva = wood. No wonder these deep woods made a perfect home for JK Rowling’s dragons in his Harry Potter series.

Although you won’t see dragons here, you will see some wild animals, most likely including bears. My last encounter was near Lake Santa Ana about two years ago when I saw a young bear in a clearing.

You can find a local guide (try Medveles) to take you to an area where you can watch them from a secluded cabin and away from bears safely. Or, to learn more about them, visit the Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary, where they care for injured bears that cannot survive in the wild.

Pro tip: Never approach a bear in the wild and keep all your food and drinks locked up if you are visiting areas where bears may be present.

11. You will find rare natural wonders and a world famous underground amusement park

In the region known as Székely-Land, home to the Hungarian minority of Székely, you will find Bear Lake, the largest solar thermal lake (both above and below ground) in the world and the only d ‘Europe. The solar thermal phenomenon refers to a layer of fresh water that forms on the surface of the salt lake, isolating it and thus maintaining its temperature constant. Used to treat many medical problems, the lake is part of a spa that you can visit.

Near Cluj you will find the Turda Gorge, a narrow, steep-sided canyon filled with caves and caverns. A natural monument and reserve, the gorge is home to rare or endangered plants and animals, unique to this region. Nearby, the spectacular world-famous underground amusement park and museum, Turda Salt Mine, attracts thousands of international and local visitors.

12. You will find that the real Transylvania is even better than its fictional version.

You won’t find vampires or dragons in Transylvania, but you will find friendly people and beautiful, natural and architectural wonders. By the time you leave, you’ll realize that the real place is better than any fictional version you might have heard of. No matter when you visit or how long you stay, you will always find something unique and beautiful about Transylvania.

One of North America’s most famous castles sits right in the center of Toronto, and it’s quite an extravagant place.

Gorgeous castles exist all over the world, although few people expect to find one in the middle of Toronto. This dense city has a lot to offer potential tourists and for anyone visiting, Casa Loma should be on the itinerary. This castle has a pretty wild history behind it and the interchangeable exhibits alone are worth a visit.

If that doesn’t convince travelers to add this stone-faced stop to their list, then perhaps the fact that it’s Toronto’s most prestigious location could. Still not convinced? In this case, there are a few other things to know about this great castle that might be worth a look.

Centuries old, or just looking like it?

From the outside, this castle seems to date back at least to the 18th century. The Neo-Gothic period began around 1740 and although Casa Loma is depicted in this style, it was not built until two centuries later. The first stone was laid in 1914 and was designed by a man named Sir Henry Pellatt. Pellatt left college to work with his father in the family brokerage business, becoming a full partner of the firm at the age of just twenty-three. Ambition was clearly no stranger to the Pellatt family, as their motto was “Devant Si Je Puis”, which means “In the foreground if I can”.

At the age of only twenty, Pellatt had met his future wife, Mary Dodgeson, who also became his wife three years later. By the time they got married, Pellatt had already traveled to Europe and was fascinated by the beautiful architecture that could be found in every historic city. This is what inspired the found castle in downtown Toronto, Casa Loma – “House on the Hill” – as well as its involvement with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada.

What is it like to visit the castle today

Casa Loma has been voted Toronto’s best castle year after year, and it’s easy to see why. Nothing has been retained in its construction, from the materials used to every individual detail inside and outside of the structure itself. Just being in the presence of such a monolith is quite an experience, and it’s hard to believe that it was only built a little over a century ago instead of three.

Each year, the castle welcomes around 650,000 visitors, as well as weddings and various other events. Casa Loma has been the setting for various film and photo shoots, so if this sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because it was featured in a movie or TV show. Now the castle is owned by the city of Toronto and is open to visitors for a regular visit.

What customers will see when they visit

The exhibits are all part of what makes Casa Loma such an amazing experience. There are several different parts of the museum that can be explored, each with unique artefacts that are original to the castle as well as from the time. One of the castle’s most enchanting exhibits is The Rooms. On this tour, guests will be able to explore the entire estate as they walk through the rooms where the Pellatt family spent much of their lives. Each room has been decorated and adorned with the finest Edwardian designs, creating a surreal experience similar to the 18th century.

The second exhibit is The Dark Side Tunnel, which takes visitors through the castle’s underground passages to the stables and shed. Throughout their journey through the tunnel, visitors have the chance to read about Toronto’s Dark Side, which details dark days in Toronto history, including sections on the plague, depression, the great Toronto fire. and the city’s first plane crash.

At the garage and shed, customers have the chance to see displays of vintage cars that are faithful to the time. The models date back to the early 1900s and include brief histories of the makes and models of cars.

On the third floor of Casa Loma you will find the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada Museum. This is dedicated to the queen’s oldest infantry regiment and details its history from 1866 to today. While in command of the Queen’s Own Rifles, Pellatt was incredibly generous in his support, a story that can also be found in this museum.

The last two exhibits are the Hollywood Film Gallery, which details Casa Loma’s cinematic history over the past 30 years. The Group of Seven Collection is a collection of artwork that was purchased by Casa Loma from 1920 to 1933. The makers of the artwork were known as the Group of Seven and believed in true art through nature, especially landscape paintings.
